Characteristics of a High Quality Wing Chair

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

You may have noticed other website selling wing chairs at wildly varying prices. While its true that you can pick up something that resembles a wing chair for low amounts of money you may not actually be getting value for money.

Below you will find a simple guide to making sure that whatever the price, you are getting the real deal.

1. Frame

Your new wing chair should be constructed from a high quality hardwood frame. This makes the item robustly constructed and more than capable of enduring daily wear for years to come. Cheaper models can be constructed of chip board or MDF, both of which have issues with disintegration over time.

2. Details

Folds, piped detailing and nailwork should be part of the chair proper and not glued on after construction. This ensures that your wing chair is durable and that it retains its original appearance. With less expensive models found aruond the Internet these glued on details can pull away from the chair leading to inconsistent appearance.

3. Leather Upholstery

In the case of leather upholstery, your leather wing chair should be constructed from a single hide with all folds and creases being created from a single piece of leather. Cheap reproduction wing chairs are often made from scraps of leather which are usually stitched together and can split over time. To check for a full hide construction simply run your fingers inside a crease and check for stitching.

3. Crease Work

Make sure that there is between 1cm and 1in of material in each fold on the chair. Reproductions often save fabric by making the creases smaller which can result in the buttoned and quilted effect losing shape and ‘ballooning’ .

If you have any concerns over the construction of our wing chairs please speak to our team who will be more than happy to respond to your questions.
